Due to its history of origins the department’s widely ranged research portfolio comprises areas of basic and applied research. The centers are individually united through essential contributions provided by the research of regional, national and global cultural heritage and its transfer in cooperation with Landessammlungen Niederösterreich and further national and international partners. 

In addition, the effect of visual worlds is analysed interdisciplinarily and new scientific tools for visual arts research are developed. One focus is on researching the history of media art as well as (audio)visual illusion and immersion media.

Apart from overriding themes, various organizational department units research in their specific fields of competence.
